Loosen Up Toronto! (2004)

After working and living in Toronto my entire life and occasionally visiting other cities, I had grown weary of certain awkward social behaviors that my hometown had habitually clung to. My theory was that if we were only made aware of these undesirable "social habits", perhaps this city would become more easy going and hospitable. I decided I would go on strike: I would no longer engage with the city until I felt my demands had been met.

When you walk around with a crutch that says "Loosen up Toronto!" attention comes your way fast. That summer I launched the "Loosen up Toronto!" ice cream flavor, had an open street-badminton tournament and garnered the attention of radio, newspaper, and community television. I was working full time on nanalan in the summer of 2004, so "Loosen up Toronto!" was fittingly a weekend campaign. It made for a fun summer, and by the end of it I felt ready to end my strike and go back to being 100% Toronto.
